Pre-press – 20 years of change – part 1
Pre-press – 20 years of change – part 1 – 20th March 2009
We see the past through the filter of our own experience. So where, with so much change, such immense technological diversity do you start? To me, pre-press looks the same, because it is still about getting content into shape for mass reproduction. But it is different to what it was in 1989 because there are so very many routes to readers, and modern pre-press technology reaches far beyond print. A tangled relationship between technology and process has helped to create intimate and closely entwined dependencies. Technology and process are no longer discrete: the one drives the other, as it clear from a look at our present reality.
Like many other industries, we use standard tools such as Photoshop and the Microsoft Office suite, with either Quark Xpress or Adobe InDesign for page layout. We rely on XML to manage interactions between processes and tools. We use colour throughout our products and assume that we can produce it accurately wherever and however we output our files. We depend on database for every aspect of production, whether it is PDF, itself a small database of page components, or a distributed variable data printing system. And, all of us are moving towards network based system architectures, from banks to publishers of all shapes and sizes. So what does this mean for pre-press?
