Finishing – part 1 – introduction to finishing
The transformation of the bindery over the past two decades has been fast paced and furious. Once a process in print production that was reserved for specialist finishing houses, printers are increasingly adding offerings from booklet making and perfect binding through to lamination, encapsulation and even shrink wrapping to their post press capabilities.
A principle player in this change has been the adoption of digital print. On-demand printing using highly automated engines boasting ‘press and print’ technology meant the bindery had to be able to cope with more specialised requirements demanded by short run work. Sending out more runs of one to a trade finisher is not a cost or time effective option. Processes had to be brought in-house to maintain control of both the schedule and the budget.
Technological development and the resulting increase in automation has had a crucial impact in this step change. Systems are now easier to use, offer quick set up and fast make readies- removing the need for highly specialised staff to make essential mechanical adjustments in the heart of the machine. Colour touch screen controls, instruction prompts and job memory storage have combined to enable operators to freely move from one machine to another; confident the product is being completed to the highest standard. This reduced manual intervention can also cut overheads and enhance flexibility as operators can competently turn their hand to a number of systems- reducing downtime when people are off sick.
