Newsletter Printing – Naming your newsletter – Part 2
Newsletter Printing – Naming your newsletter – Part 2 – 17th November 2009
Newsworthy Words
Some newsletters have a word in the name that instantly tells the reader that the contents of the publication are newsworthy. Most of the words in the following list were borrowed from newspaper names and feature headlines. Consider them when naming your publication.
Advocate, Announcer, Briefings, Broadcast, Bulletin, Comment, Communicator, Communiqué, Courier, Clips, Forum, Highlights, Hotline, In Brief, Inside, keynotes, News brief, News line, Notes, Observer, Perspective, Profile, Relay, Release, Report, Reporter, review, Scene, Scope, Spotlight, Talk, Transmit, Update, View, Vision, Voice Wire, Word.
Powerful Sales Words
In addition to news words, look for words that tell the reader there is a benefit to reading. Here are some powerful marketing words for business newsletters:
Profit, Money, Growth, Success, Wealth. Thrive, Save, Free, Results, Easy, Fast
Here are some words that help promote to volunteers and donors:
Improve, Change, Influence, Impact, Make a Difference, Breakthroughs, Forward, Inspire, Brighten, Make a Mark, Affect
Keep these words in mind for headlines, features and articles, as well as for your name and tagline.
The Danger of Ignoring This Advice
Not all newsletters effectively identify their intentions in the name. Think about how long it would take a new reader to figure out the scope of the publication without it.
For example, years ago, I picked up a printed newsletter called Power Bar News in a bicycle shop and couldn’t figure out what a “Power Bar” was. Because the newsletter was in a cycling store, I first assumed they were talking about customised handlebars. Then I saw an article in the publication about how Billy Idol used them for training and assumed it was a weight lifting system. I scanned the nameplate and the masthead. I looked for a small ad, anything, but I couldn’t find a clue. Then, buried in one of the articles, the writer talked about eating them. Aha! Candy bars. This must have taken 15 minutes.
I went through this exercise out of my curiosity for newsletters. No other new reader would have done it. The publisher could have avoided this problem by adding a tagline like this one to Power Bar News: “How athletes can achieve maximum performance with Power Bar high-energy snacks.”
