Environmentally Aware Printing – Dealing with the stickies problem Part 4

Environmentally Aware Printing – Dealing with the stickies problem Part 4 – 3rd March 2010

If removal of stickies by one of the above techniques is not practical or economical then chemical techniques can be utilised. This exploits the chemical differences between stickies and fibres. This can lead to either dispersion of the stickies to a very fine particle of such a size that problems are not evident or passivation of the stickies. This second approach basically de-activates the stickie particles so that they can be incorporated into the finished product undetected.

A wide range of treatments has been researched and is being used for this purpose. Common ones include talc, alum, polypropylene/ polyethylene fibrils, ethoxylated alkylphenols, zirconium, salts, ionic dispersants/ stabilisers and solvents.

In some mills a failsafe mechanism is employed in the form of a high shear, high temperature dispersing unit. The aim of this is to break down any contraries which reach the end of the cycle, into a very small particle size. This facilitates even distribution of finely divided and hopefully undetectable particles throughout the finished product.

Whilst all these techniques are useful in controlling recycling efficiency and product quality, there is a cost involved. Eventual removal and disposal of contraries can also be a costly business. Most recycling mills now build this into their calculations as they ‘Cost of Quality’. The question which remains is ‘Can this cost be minimised or possibly removed by technological development in the adhesives field?’

Environmentally Aware Printing – Citrus-based washes

Environmentally Aware Printing – Citrus-based washes – 5th February 2010
The most widely-favoured option at the moment is to use citrus-based by products to produce washes that are effective in their cleaning action, are miscible with water, have low volatility and, incidentally, smell nice. Such products are available from many sources and are typified by Keane Graphic Products’ Bio-Graphic range.

These water-miscible blanket and roller washes are commonly totally free of organic solvents yet are fully as effective as the solvent-based counterparts, as the growing number of regular users are finding. They are formulated from natural products that are fully biodegradable.

The action of these washes is different from solvent-based products but no less effective. It is particularly useful for dealing with lint and gum glaze. It dissolves ink to a very high degree and yet is safe to use on blankets and plates. Regular use will prevent build up of a glaze and remove the need for cleaning with stronger, more damaging solvents.

Vegetable- oil based
A more recent approach that is, as yet, less widely available is to use vegetable-oil based cleaners. These are effective in cleaning off inks, as long as they have not been allowed to dry hard, yet do not have such an aggressive effect on the skin and are not volatile. This non-volatility does mean that greater care needs to be taken to dry off the rollers or blanket after cleaning.

An example of this type of product for those printers who want to eliminate VOCs but are uncomfortable with water-based products, are the range of Prisco Enviroklene blanket and roller washes from Printers Service of Newark, New Jersey and distributed in the UK by Keane Graphic Products. They surpass the most stringent limits on VOCs imposed by any state of the USA, let alone the UK, without having to rely on toxic chlorinated hydrocarbons or emulsification with water. Enviroklene does not swell blankets or rollers, is significantly less toxic than conventional solvent washes and is suitable for any size of web or sheet fed press.

Jump Start with a Marketing Plan – Part 3 – 31/07/09

Every newsletter is published with the hope of generating a flood of responses. But before you can achieve your dreams, you must first set up your marketing goals.
These goals will give you the direction you need when choosing newsletter format, content, design, mailing lists and other elements. This chapter shows you how to set specific goals that can be achieved within the pages or screens of your newsletter. It also shows you how to streamline the promotional efforts of your newsletter with your other marketing projects.

Set Performance Goals
In general, all marketing materials seek to:

  • Increase awareness of the organisation
  • Sell products, services, ideas and causes
  • Maintain contact with clients, members, volunteers, employees or supporters
  • Contact prospects
  • Reinforce other advertising campaigns

Your newsletter’s goals may encompass the general ones listed above, but they also include specific goals unique to your newsletter. You may be trying to maintain or increase membership of your association. Perhaps you’re lobbying an issue to legislators or community leaders. If you provide a service, such as accounting, you may be trying to find clients fitting a certain profile.
If your newsletter is being used to promote your existing products and services. Include your existing support base in your promotional goals, so that jobs from current clients continue to come in while you’re converting other prospects.

Many publishers think only of existing supporters and exclude prospects. In fact, some organisations send newsletters only to their current donors and volunteers. But your news should also be sent to community members who are not already supporting the organisation.
Think about your specific goals. Why are you interested in publishing a newsletter? What do you expect it to do for you?

What Every Editor Must Know

A newsletter’s objective is stated in its mission statement or statement of purpose. The editor must know of the following:

  • What direction(s) are we expanding into?
  • What are our long term goals?
  • How do we currently reach customers and clients?
  • How do customers and clients want to be reached?
  • Why do customers buy?
  • What is the average time to make a sale?
  • How well are we known in the market?
  • What are we selling?
  • How are we different from competitors?

The answer to these questions ultimately leads to the:

  • Newsletter name
  • Tagline
  • Content
  • Response mechanisms
  • Layout decisions
  • Distribution methods

It’s important that the goals of your newsletter be in line with your organisation’s current short-term and long-term plans.

Everything you need to know about Digital Printing – part 9 – 14th July 2009
High speed inkjets
Inkjets are another major process, already dominant in wide format work and very widely used in desktop personal printers, high quality photographic printers of all size, and widely used in high speed transactions work such as bills and statements. Inkjet heads can be mounted as over-prints on conventional print and finishing lines and so they are widely used for personalising pre printed direct mail materials.
Inkjets have a lot of scope for future development and long term it is possible that they will start to supplant conventional printing presses such as lithography and flexography. The reason is that an inkjet is mechanically much simpler than conventional presses, with the print heads being essentially solid state devices. All that is needed is an accurate and reliable paper or substrate feeding mechanism. However, inkjet inks are far more expensive to make than offset or flexo inks, which may be the real limiting factor unless new manufacturing methods come along. There are also issues about the lack of easily interchangeable spot colours for inkjets.
Inkjets had been used as over-printers on conventional printing and finishing lines from the early 1980s. However, the first recognisable standalone production inkjet was the reef fed Versamark series, demonstrated by Scitex Digital Printing as an early prototype at drupa 1995 and turned into a production model for transactional print by the late 1990s. This uses a full width array of inkjet heads that print in a single pass. Up to four colours per side can be specified. Actually, the development had been started by Kodak when it owned the same operation, based in Dayton, Ohio. It sold it to Scitex in 1993 and bought it back ten years later.
Versamarks have been developed over the years and remain very fast but with fairly limited quality. They are widely used for transactional printing, for bills, statements and the like where text is important but image quality does not need to be fabulous.

In flight, preflight, and post flight – part 3

In flight, preflight, and post flight – part 3 – 7th May 2009

Taking responsibility
However, a more specific explanation lies somewhere between the creative stage, that is designing the layout, and the print stage, where ink finally gets put on paper. As a rule, graphic designers do not want to be bothered with technical information. This has been proven time and time again.

Regardless, they are responsible for their creations, and as part of a larger workflow picture, need to consider a quality control aspect. An aspect that doe not take the designer too far away from the ‘creative process. This is the perfect place and graphic designers should use a built- in preflight tool or plug-in within Adobe InDesign, where the creative process begins.

The actual time to use ‘that other side of the brain’ and to make sure the project meets specifications happens after the creative stage. Checking mechanical aspects of the file, for the right image formats, no low resolution images used etc. These type of checks typically happen at the pre-production department. Often, creative and production departments are combined – that is the ‘creative’ person does the production too. However, these are two complete and distinct disciplines. Personnel in production departments tend to be more mechanically inclined for performing the majority of preflight checks then collect and package the job lastly produce a PDF.

Natural landscape

Recycled’s also come in a range of colours and textures. The Cairn range, for instance, from speciality recycled paper merchant paperback has some interesting alternatives for those looking for a natural recycled. Made with 100% recycled fibre, the range includes a number of shades that enhance the paper’s ‘pure’ appeal.

In white, cream and buff, Cairn is available in a selection of paper weights, as well as kraft and ribbed kraft versions. It also comes as Cairn Straw, with flecks of straw included in the paper in 120, 200 and 320 g/m2 weights.

There is also a selection of chunky Cairn Boards in 500, 700, 1000 micron in 14 colours; a 650 micron available in three colours; and a 2000 micron available in nine colours. The board colours are sympathetic to the recycled nature of the paper and include shades such as Saffron, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Sans, Stone and Charcoal.

Paperback is finding that there is still strong demand for these genuine recycled. The company’s Alan Goschalk said, ‘Whilst the number of environmentally friendly certified papers is expanding rapidly, there is still a significant segment of the green market that sees recycled paper as the first choice.

‘We are also finding considerable interest in those grades with a strong, natural appearance or texture. Cairn papers and boards are proving particularly popular with designers looking for creative papers that have a recycled appearance and effectively communicate the green message’.

The company has also recently extended its Context range, adding Birch and Cork. These smooth uncoated papers are available from 80 to 280 g/m2 in ivory and buff and include a distinctive fleck.

For more than 200 years Garnetts has been manufacturing speciality papers and the company has embraced the demand for recycled and environmentally friendly products. As part of its on-going developments, Garnetts has recently launched the 100% recycled Dales range of buff and tinted boards.

Whiter than white

There are plenty of companies that specify recycled papers because they want an earthy, natural look and fell. There are also many corporates who want to show their support for the environment, but insist on a clean white paper.

The latest whiter than white paper comes from Steinbeis, with EvolutionWhite carrying a brightness of ISO 100.
‘Decision makers who choose EvolutionWhite, whilst making use of the optical advantages of a 100% white recycled paper, are at the same time path breakers in protection of the climate and resources, ‘said Michael Soffge, CEO at Steinbeis Papier.

Not only is it made from 100% recycled fibres, the paper also carries the Blue Angel environmental label.
The newly formed Arjowiggins Graphic is also promising a soon to be launched ultra white brand with Cocoon. It will be made from 100% recycled fibre and it has been indicated that the paper will be whiter than virgin qualities.
Lenzing Papier is a leading manufacturer of recycled papers. Its Lenzing Premium Quality covers many print applications. The range is suitable for text and cover, brochures and advertising material, annual reports, letters and envelopes, books, pre-print and OCR. This high bulk offset paper offers good opacity and a pleasing surface feel.

The company also manufacturers a wide portfolio of other recycled options including Lenza-Top Recycling, Lenza – Top- Recycling Pure, Lenza – Top0 Recycling Super, Lenza care, Lenza Green, Impact and 100% Recycled Copier.

The mill is currently working on new developments, which will lead to ground breaking products destined to come to market soon, helping to maintain its position at the forefront of recycled paper development.

Premier Beswick is launching new additions to its Evolution recycles range. The range consists of Evolution 100 Business Offset, a 100% recycled uncoated paper; Evolution 100 Premium Silk, an FSC certified 100% recycled coated quality. This high white shade and fast ink drying times are characteristics not normally found in 100% recycled papers; Evolution 76 Gloss and Satin – a 75% recycled option is available in both satin and gloss finishes; Evolution 100 Catalogue Gloss and Silk, another 100% recycled option which has been developed as a publishing grade; Evolution 100 Text, a 100% recycled uncoated quality with excellent whiteness and surface texture; and Evolution 100 Digital, an FSC certified 100% recycled uncoated quality guaranteed for digital applications.
