Everything you need to know about Digital Printing – part 9 – 14th July 2009
High speed inkjets
Inkjets are another major process, already dominant in wide format work and very widely used in desktop personal printers, high quality photographic printers of all size, and widely used in high speed transactions work such as bills and statements. Inkjet heads can be mounted as over-prints on conventional print and finishing lines and so they are widely used for personalising pre printed direct mail materials.
Inkjets have a lot of scope for future development and long term it is possible that they will start to supplant conventional printing presses such as lithography and flexography. The reason is that an inkjet is mechanically much simpler than conventional presses, with the print heads being essentially solid state devices. All that is needed is an accurate and reliable paper or substrate feeding mechanism. However, inkjet inks are far more expensive to make than offset or flexo inks, which may be the real limiting factor unless new manufacturing methods come along. There are also issues about the lack of easily interchangeable spot colours for inkjets.
Inkjets had been used as over-printers on conventional printing and finishing lines from the early 1980s. However, the first recognisable standalone production inkjet was the reef fed Versamark series, demonstrated by Scitex Digital Printing as an early prototype at drupa 1995 and turned into a production model for transactional print by the late 1990s. This uses a full width array of inkjet heads that print in a single pass. Up to four colours per side can be specified. Actually, the development had been started by Kodak when it owned the same operation, based in Dayton, Ohio. It sold it to Scitex in 1993 and bought it back ten years later.
Versamarks have been developed over the years and remain very fast but with fairly limited quality. They are widely used for transactional printing, for bills, statements and the like where text is important but image quality does not need to be fabulous.

Print Finishing – part 13 – 18th June 2009
Foil blocking is registering increased interest as well. Once reserved for prestige work, now it can be easily found on stationery as on a corporate brochure. The variety of achievable effects has helped create a renewed buzz. Where gold was once the usual choice, printers and end users can pick from an array of coloured options as well as transparent foils that can create an effect similar to spot varnishing.
Another service is card cutting where the drive of digital print has enabled small runs for business cards. Finishing this externally is not cost effective option so increasingly printers are investing in their own cutters. Operation has also become more user friendly enabling a flexible staffing approach.
This demand has lead to the development of more complex systems such as the Kam ProCut 74 capable of die cutting, creasing, perforating, kiss cutting or cold embossing, hot foil stamping and hologram stamping. Additional hot foil stamping and hot cut modules can be added and removed from the machine. The hot foil stamping unit can produce hot foil stamping and embossing in one pass, has two foil feeders with individually programmable servo-drives and has independently controlled heating zones.
For operations that have brought some elements of finishing in-house but have yet to build up their binding capabilities such as saddle stitching and perfect binding, other options are available including wire, plastic comb or coil. Not only does the initial investment require a smaller capital outlay, but the flexible process can handle a variety of short run, different sized products like manuals and calendars. However, consumable costs should be factored when longer runs become staple work.
But it is not just in the completion of work where printers are branching out and becoming more confident in taking fresh challenges – leading to the creation of additional revenue streams. Increasingly businesses are looking to build up their handling capabilities by offering mailing solutions. As preparing mail can be time consuming and tedious, manufacturers have been developing folding and inserting systems that offer a high degree of product integrity. Printers can then actively build up this side of the business safe in knowledge they can assure end users that their customers will receive a reliable and confidential service. Improved automation has created different automatic settings and intelligent compensation for errors as well as improved speeds.
To ensure the final product reaches its destination in tip-top condition, many businesses are realising the value of adding a shrink wrapper. Often with a tiny footprint, these mobile systems can be simply wheeled in and out of operation and stowed away reducing pressure on the bindery floor. Ensuring the product remains scratch free is not the only attraction. Some printers are using them to bundle shorter runs together or as part of a complete packaging service for jobs that have more than one element to their make up. Others are using them as a way to add value to runs of one giving the end recipient an opening experience for their one-off purchase.

Finishing – part 12 – 17th June 2009
Value added
Fashion trends move in full circles and nowhere are this more true than the value added options printers can now look to enhance their finishing fire power? Commercial printers are recognising that an in-house finishing service is a much more cost effective strategy, giving them complete control over the added value of the end product.
Thermography and foil printing are just two of the techniques that are enjoying resurgence. Previously the highly specialised options were offered by operations that had invested in expensive kit and craved a reputation in this niche market. Set up was time consuming and so this was an expensive process at the end of a short run or made only financially viable by long runs – one reason why it didn’t take care off with digital print for a long time.
However, as digital started to make in-roads into the litho arena the options of foiling, thermography and embossing became more viable and research turned towards helping add value to the digital run through interesting times.
The technology had experienced a dip in demand because thermographic images melted when overprinted by a laser printer. However, specially developed UV powders ensure that the finished raised image is ‘laser proof’. Now glitters can be added to the thermographic resulting in many striking finishes new treatments eliminate static so powders can run through the machine easily and clear from the non-image areas of the substrate.
At drupa Caslon presented its slow drying digital print technique that uses a copier with the UV drier removed. This enables the wet printed sheet to be dusted with coating before going through a ThermoTech machine.

Finishing – part 8 – Binders – 10th June 2009
Automated functions in perfect binding allow for a quick and accurate set up for each time. These include sensors within the book clamp that enable each book to be measured for thickness, which then sets up the nipping/cover feed guides, and use of book verification systems to avoid wrongly collated signatures.
And now printers are considering whether to add PUR to their EVA gluing capabilities. One of the key benefits of PUR glue is the lay flat properties, which allow books to open flat without the spine cracking. Less brittle, PUR can also content with a range of temperatures- hot or cold- and the glue does not adversely react with digitally printed stock and warp like EVA glues can. Hot melt can be limiting with the range of stock that can be bound and, while PUR is much stronger and works on a much wider range of stock, it is more expensive.
However, a traditional glue tank system using PUR requires emptying and scrupulous cleaning at the end of a shift, or it would very soon become unless nozzle applicators are used. These incorporate a valve to minimise glue exposure so PUR glue is supplied from a sealed unit and the cleaning and handling issues are resolved.
Useful features on perfect binders include intelligent cover handling and feeding that can save many production headaches while winged books can be produced of the machine has a flexible enough scoring system. Having an integrated pre-jogger places an important operation where it is needed, in the loading area, which is ergonomically sensible. Delivery methods too can have variations that make a different-smooth delivery means no spine damage when the books exit the machine, and side gluing and asset for binding heavy stock covers and a feature generally only available with larger, more expensive machines.
Development continues to centre on improving automation with Heidelberg’s Eurotrim 4000 adhesive binders including optimised net output of up to 95% thanks to intelligent automation, modular design and end to precision and Horizon’s high profile colour touch screen on the BQ-270. Not to mention Duplo’s fully automatic. DuBinder range with its easy to use integrated touch screen controls, facilitating a 35 second set up between programmes, and Wohlenbergs’ Master Series extension to its modularly designed ‘City e’ equipped with the dynamic drive technology and ConditionPro compatible control generation.

Finishing – part 7 – Binders – 10th June 2009
Binders
It has taken longer for the seeds of change to impact perfect binding but more and more firms are investing in this technology as they seek to increase profit margins. Perfect bound ‘soft cover’ binding was traditionally only practical for long runs. The equipment was very expensive, highly mechanical, required skilled operators and took up a vast amount of space and so was the preserve of specialist manufacturers. This also kept the cost unit of books at a prohibitive price unless long runs were employed.
With automated, smaller machines now virtually standard on the market, buyers are choosing perfect binding to finish items that wouldn’t have been previously practical or economical. Flexible off line binding equipment that has the capability to perfect bind low run jobs quickly and with a high quality finish, have proven extremely popular among printers. After weighing up the capital outlay with savings in out sourcing costs, the flexibility to take on rush jobs or complete large orders by the agreed deadline through overtime, and the ability to widely market the service safe in the knowledge the work could be completed accurately and efficiently in-house proved to be an attractive option for many operations.
What has really impacted perfect binding’s growth is that it enables printers to add value by providing increased demand for his finishing technique in short run work. This is because it has a better perceived value than saddle stitching.
Thanks to automation, fast make readies, easy set up and small footprints, printers can be confident the investment they are making will pay off and they will be able to produce the quality required by end users. They can also be assured the subsequent reduction in the amount of time the job takes to complete allows more work to be produced per shift- making the investment an economical option. Helping slash running times is the ability to store jobs, especially for long or repeat work. Memory storage capabilities eliminate set up times for subsequent or similar jobs as well.

In flight, preflight, and post flight – part 3 – 7th May 2009
Taking responsibility
However, a more specific explanation lies somewhere between the creative stage, that is designing the layout, and the print stage, where ink finally gets put on paper. As a rule, graphic designers do not want to be bothered with technical information. This has been proven time and time again.
Regardless, they are responsible for their creations, and as part of a larger workflow picture, need to consider a quality control aspect. An aspect that doe not take the designer too far away from the ‘creative process. This is the perfect place and graphic designers should use a built- in preflight tool or plug-in within Adobe InDesign, where the creative process begins.
The actual time to use ‘that other side of the brain’ and to make sure the project meets specifications happens after the creative stage. Checking mechanical aspects of the file, for the right image formats, no low resolution images used etc. These type of checks typically happen at the pre-production department. Often, creative and production departments are combined – that is the ‘creative’ person does the production too. However, these are two complete and distinct disciplines. Personnel in production departments tend to be more mechanically inclined for performing the majority of preflight checks then collect and package the job lastly produce a PDF.

Offset Lithography – Printing to you and me! – Part 13 – 23rd April 2009
MIS- to measure is to manage
Management Information Systems is another entrant into the production area of print that has had a resounding affect on maximising efficiency over the last two decades. Before the advent of these amazingly intricate and complicated add-ons to the production process, the whole governance of the factory was carried out either written or verbally, allowing for a multitude of misunderstandings and communication problems. Also, from the shop floor point view, filling in time sheets was a laborious and fiddly occupation, often taking valuable production time as well as being widely open to a misinterpretation, making the measuring of the ‘true’ time spent on jobs almost impossible to calculate.
We have seen a great influx of companies all eager to get their systems in place in a printing company in order to capture all the information possible in an effort to manage the production flow in as efficient a manner as possible. Tharstern, Optimus, Shuttleworth, Imprint Business Systems, and EFI, have all become virtually household names in the industry now as they push their individual solutions geared to helping a printing company operate in amore efficient way.

Printing – 20 years of Printing – Part 15 – 7th March 2009
Manroland’s Gary Doman is similar to Richard Bradley, Bob Usher and George Clarke in the way that he has been active at the coalface of change has taken place in the commercial print sector over the past 20 years. He is now manroland UK sheetfed sales director and has been intimately involved with the Roland 700 since its launch.
He freely acknowledges Heidelberg broke new ground with its SM 102, but he feels that the launch out of the 700 had an affect on the printing industry that was much more fundamental: He said, ‘The Roland 700 introduced double diameter impression cylinders, important for this meant the sheet was always under impression while printing was taking place and an end to the horrors of snap lines on solids and tints. The seven o’clock cylinder arrangement coupled with the use of transferters allowed the sheet to be presented directly into the next printing unit. At a stroke the 700 did away with complex transfer cylinders and the related fears of marking. These innovations were new to the industry in 1993 and it is a testimony to how far ahead of the game we were that now virtually all presses are structured like this.’
The Roland 700 emulated Heidelberg’s belief in the use of computers to manage press operations, but neither manufacturer found sailing was entirely in clear waters with a following wind. The 700 wasn’t’ without hiccups as Mr Doman acknowledges: ‘The press printed superbly, it is still probably the best in the game, but we pioneered the use fibre optic cabling in the press and the cable junctions were perhaps not quite robust enough for the heat and the movement of a printing press, so some of the early machines had teething troubles but these were quickly identified and dealt with’.

Printing – 20 years of Printing – Part 1 – 30th March 2009
Some days are diamond; some are coal – a metaphor richly mined by songwriters and philosophers alike in an attempt to convey an impression of how events at a particular time impact ted on lives in general. It works equally well if days are changed to years; the inference being of course is that diamond is good, coal dark and black. Yet to be classified is 2009; considerable hindsight and memory burnishing generally has to take place before ‘diamond’ seems a worthy epithet. The Printing House and Print Buying Direct have no doubt whatsoever that 2009 is a diamond year and well worthy of celebration, for it now has two decades of being at the frontline serving the graphic arts in general and the printing industry quite specifically.
The Printing House has clocked up its 20th year not as a scramble to a finishing line – but as the early stages of a marathon run. A new generation is now in command who view these 20 years partly as an excellent achievement, but more as a waypoint on a path that will go for further decades.
Reaching this milestone, The Printing House learned along the way that it needed to anticipate forces of change as much as to react top them. Also 20 years does of course build up skills in this respect, but the lesson best learned from 20 years of publishing excellence is a need to eliminate complacency. Most people would accept the concept that lessons don’t live in a vacuum; they are given as well as received and behave like a two-edge sword. Twenty years of serving the printing industry lays down a rich patina of experience and a publishing house by its very nature is both archival and hoarder, so why not at least for a short time, be indulgent and put a publisher’s hat on, take a ringside seat and look back at the past 20 years from a printing industry perspective. A few laughs will be in order; sadness will be there as over the two decades technology’s fearsome but inexorably advancing grip took ever more people from our industry. The indulgence of reviewing the past 20 years will be for those who love print, whether still in the industry, on its fringes or those who have advanced on to active retirement. Whatever the segment of the audience in which you sit, there is little doubt that memory buds will be stimulated.
