The Printing House

New team at Crewe printing firm uses technology to beat credit crunch

ONE OF SOUTH CHESHIRE’S largest firms of commercial printers is being bought out by its management and developing new technology to help its customers beat the credit crunch. The Printing House was formed a little over 17 years ago by well-known local businessman Derek Springthorpe and Martyn Winstanley. Today, it employs 36 people in 14,000 square feet of purpose-built premises on the Marshfield Bank Employment Park in Middlewich Road and is one of the biggest printers in the North West.

Mr Springthorpe is delighted that the business is being bought by his son, Paul, and his fellow Director Peter Harrison – and that they are bringing in even more technology to reduce the cost of buying print.

"We started this company when the country was recovering from the last property crash and we invested in people and technology to make print buying efficient and cost-effective", said Derek Springthorpe.

"Now we have customers who are feeling the pinch because of the latest credit crunch and I am delighted that Paul and Peter are carrying on that tradition".

The company has rebranded its online shopping site – www.printbuyingdirect.co.uk - which enables companies anywhere in the country to specify, order and design print online, using the latest digital presses so that even very low numbers can be produced cost-effectively.

The Printing House has also installed a new 'robot' platesetter which produces printing plates automatically, saving labour.

And successful local Suzuki & Mitsubishi motor group Grensons recently sold seven cars as a result of a single postcard mailing, using the company’s variable data printing technology.

"Adding internet-based access to our traditional sales base and introducing new approaches help us to reduce costs for our customers", said Peter Harrison.

Paul Springthorpe, who is joint Managing Director with Mr Harrison, said the buy-out was both an exciting and challenging time.

"My father and Martyn created a company that was not only successful but also one that customers enjoyed working with to create great print".

"Apart from the new technology, we have also been busy recession-proofing The Printing House so that our customers can feel secure in the knowledge that we are going to be around for the long term".

October 2008

From 1st October 2008 onwards Peter Harrison & Paul Springthorpe will be joint Managing Director of The Printing House following a successful MBO. Having in effect already influenced the way the business is run many aspects of The Printing House will remain as before. But first on the list of tasks for the new Directors will be a total review of the company and its expenditures. In light of the credit crunch and possible forthcoming recession Peter & Paul feel it necessary to reduce expenditure on many items to ensure that The Printing House remains competitive into the long term future. The long term aim is to protect jobs and the business as a whole.

September 2008

Following on from a review of our ‘green policy’ and in pursuit of printing excellence we are running trials on Heidelberg Fast Set Inks to replace our Huber (Stehlin-Hostag) inks. Both inks are vegetable oil based (environmentally friendly) but after extensive research we believe the Heidelberg ink to be the greener option. Quality results are initially very impressive. The greenest feature of the ink is that you use less of it, hence wasting less valuable resources.

September 2008

This month we are sorry to loose Martyn Winstanley as Managing Director of The Printing House Ltd. Martyn has opted to retire at the tender age of 48! Having spent 30 years in the printing industry, mainly in Cheshire, Martyn set up The Printing House Ltd in 1991 with Derek Springthorpe. Martyn’s involvement throughout the building (especially in the design department) will be sorely missed. Good luck with the future Martyn.

September 2008 - Paper Industry Increases Prices Again

We have recently been informed that all the major Paper Mills are increasing their prices for the 4th time this year. This applies to all weights and grades of paper and board. Whilst we will try and absorb as much of the cost ourselves, there will obviously be an impact in our prices. especially for print jobs with a large paper usage. As part of our Environmental policy and general green attitude towards print, we are undertaking a review of print spoil sheets and actively seeking to reduce make ready sheets. We now also offer green recyclable lamination. For those who are interested the reasons are as follows!!

  • Due to Mill closures demand is outstripping supply!

  • Pulp prices have increased by 24% in 2 years

  • Starch by 40% in 14 Months

  • Haulage by 6-9% in 12 months

  • Energy by 15% in 2 years

April 2008 – This month at The Printing House we celebrate our 17th year of producing first rate design and print. Founded in 1991 by Derek Springthorpe and Martyn Winstanley, The Printing House fully expect to ‘continue to invest in the latest technology to help maintain our market leading position in the printing industry, producing leaflets, brochures and stationery’.

December 2007 - Again The Printing House receives further recognition of our investment in technology. The industry magazine Print Week published an article explaining about our investment in the new Xerox DC 5000 digital press. The press was leased in order that we expand into a new area of business, which complements our existing litho print business producing leaflets, brochures, annual reports etc. Have a look at us the Print Week website

December 2007 - The Printing House appear on the www.printingtalk.com website. This recognition was due to our recent investment in the latest Xerox DC5000 digital press. Having evaluated presses made by HP (the Indigo), Konica Minolta, Xante, amongst others, the Xerox was chosen for its excellent print quality, fast set up, low running costs and ability to produce business cards, leaflets, brochures, appointment cards and posters to the same quality as our Sakurai litho presses (conventional printing presses). See the full article for more information. http://www.printingtalk.com/news/xro/xro228.html

July 2007 ISO colour standard – This month at The Printing House we invested in the technology required to produce work to the ISO Colour Standard. This involves working with Spectrophotometers, Densitometers and CIP3 technology to produce print that is consistent for colour time after time. This means that the brochure or company newsletter that is so important to your company will be consistent in colour reproduction each and every time it is printed.

March 2005 - Catch up with our latest news on the Heidelberg website. This glowing report was done following our recent large investment in pre-press software. The Heidelberg ‘Printready’ software takes artwork from our customers and checks it against a list of standards. If the artwork fails any one of these tests the software can be set to fail, warn or proceed. This safeguards the valuable work that we print for our customers and ensures that the brochure, flyer or poster looks exactly as the customer thought it should.
